A mood switch awaits in semilucent 2
PARADISE RISING has been relentless in its pursuit of putting Filipino talent on the world map. We see it in the success of semilucent, Guapdad 4000’s debut album 1176 and Ylona Garcia’s hits All That and Don’t Go Changing. There are loads of Filipino talent worth celebrating from all corners of the world, and PARADISE RISING is doing just that.
True to its ode to the summer paradise of the Philippines, semilucent 2 docked on our shores with a new roster of Filipino talent—both homegrown and diasporic.
Oh, and did we mention that they brought along a special guest, too?
The five-track EP is composed of Island Baby (Maarte) by Canada-based duo MANILA GREY, All Night by Philippine-native singer Steven Peregrina and Situation by upcoming Amsterdam-based R&B singer daze. For Black Hearts, hip-hop powerhouse CA Christian Alexander teams up with seasoned rapper Curtismith. Lastly, we have Manila Killa, the Filipino-American electronic producer who recruited the help of Yuna for his track Reminisce.
Be prepared for a mood switch because semilucent 2 moves away from the first compilation’s hazy and dreamy beat. For this EP, eternal summer has come to a close. The tracks draw inspiration from the darker side of paradise—one where seasons have changed but we can’t get our minds off better times. It’s a feeling that hits too close to home.
But beyond the feelings the EP will evoke, semilucent 2 is a continuous show of how Filipino artists can transcend genres, barriers and expectations. CA Christian Alexander shares that he and Curtismith “are excited to be a part of the semilucent 2 EP because we have an opportunity to represent the Philippines on 88rising’s global platform and inspire the next generation of artists to continue to keep pushing Filipino music culture forward.”
